Our Story
Barsana was born from a simple observation: the world’s most exquisite textiles were disappearing as master weavers aged without successors, their techniques dying with them.
We started by visiting weaving villages across India, sitting with artisans, learning their stories, understanding their struggles. We found incredible skill, deep knowledge, and beautiful traditions—but also poverty, exploitation by middlemen, and children leaving for cities because weaving couldn’t sustain families.
We decided to do things differently. We work directly with artisan communities, paying fair prices that reflect the months of labor in each piece. We document techniques with textile historians. We support apprenticeships to pass skills to the next generation. We celebrate slow fashion and conscious consumption.
Every saree we sell is a vote for preserving craft, supporting communities, and choosing beauty that endures over trends that fade.

Design & Documentation
We work with textile historians to research traditional patterns, then collaborate with master weavers to adapt
designs that honor heritage while meeting contemporary aesthetics.

Artisan Partnership
We match each design to the right artisan community based on their specialized skills—Jamdani weavers in
Bengal, Banarasi brocade experts in Varanasi, Madhubani painters in Bihar.

Handloom Creation
The weaving begins on traditional pit looms or frame looms. For complex pieces like Jamdani or Banarasi,
this can take 3-8 months of daily work by skilled hands.

Hand Embellishment
If the design includes painting or embroidery, specialized artisans add their craft—hand-painting Kalamkari
motifs, embroidering Chikankari patterns, or applying mirror work.

Quality Certification
Each saree undergoes rigorous quality checks. Silk Mark certification for silk sarees, verification of natural dyes,
authentication of techniques ensuring what we promise is what you receive.

Archival Documentation
We photograph, document, and archive each piece with details about the artisan, technique, timeline, and
materials. This documentation travels with your saree.

Thoughtful Presentation
Your saree arrives wrapped in handloom cotton, accompanied by care instructions, artisan story, and certificate
of authenticity—everything needed to preserve it for generations.
